The Neighborhood Learning Alliance High School University (HSU) Program partners with Carlow University and CCAC to provide primarily low-income students access to free college/workforce courses and work-related work experience in high demand career fields in the Greater Pittsburgh region. Interested students choose one of the four career pathways to enroll: Business, Health, Technology, and Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing.
Students can enroll in one college/workforce course per semester (Summer, Fall, Spring). The model includes services such as: Mandatory tutoring for college/workforce courses, tutoring for high school courses, college and career preparation, career exploration, internships, community engagement, and leadership development. Course:
Carlow University Special Topics – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Our World (3 credits) – Fall 2025
Students will be introduced the concept of business strategy by examining the relationship between
strategy and operational effectiveness. The use of artificial intelligence (AI)
technologies and implied associated processes and culture change is examined in the
content of competitive advantage and industry transformation. It prepares students to
develop effective organizational strategies that mitigate environmental challenges
using innovative approaches that leverage evidence-based business frameworks. Best
practices in mission and strategic alignment are applied to multiple economic sectors in
both U.S. and global contexts with an emphasis on ethical leadership.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the relationship between strategy development and
operational effectiveness.
2. Evaluate the competitive environment of an organization using tools such
as Porter’s 5 forces model of competition, driving force analysis, strategic
group mapping and competitor analysis.
3. Assess organizations’ competitive advantage using technologies,
methods and processes that leverage artificial intelligence.
4. Evaluate organizational resources and competitive position using tools
such as contemporary competitive analysis, value chain analysis, and
benchmarking.
5. Formulate effective and ethical strategies that demonstrate an
understanding of the strategic planning process.
6. Analyze the value of strategic planning in different industry sectors of the
global economy.
This class will occur on Saturdays, September 13th – October 25th,2025 10:00 am – 2:30 pm.
Spring 2026 Courses – Introduction to Psychology, User Experience (UX) I, and Dale Carnegie (Non-Credited Course):
* Spring 2026 courses will occur on Saturdays, January 24th – March 21st,2026 10:00 am – 2:30 pm.
* Spring ’26 Orientation: All student must attend orientation on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Orientation will be held at Carlow University. The time will be emailed to all registered students.
Carlow University Introduction to Psychology (3 Credits) – Spring 2026
This class gives a broad introduction to the field of psychology including its history, major theories, and challenges, including the study of people with and without psychiatric disorders. You will learn the major concepts and terminology of the discipline and give you a better understanding of self and others.
Carlow University User Experience (UX) I: Understanding User Experience (3 Credits) – Spring 2026
Technology companies spend billions of dollars ensuring that their products are intuitive and delight users. This course will teach students how they do that. Students will learn what drives product usability, the basics of User Experience (UX) design and research, and how to build wireframes and prototypes. By the end of this course, students will be on their way to building experiences that make customers happy.
SAT Prep – January 2026
Private SAT prep workshops through the NLA Partnership with Pittsburgh Prep. This is only for 11th grade students currently enrolled in the year-long program.
Dale Carnegie (Industry Recognized Certification) – Spring 2026
The Dale Carnegie Course will help you master the human relations skills that enable you to thrive in any setting. You’ll discover how to form closer, more rewarding relationships built on trust and respect. The course will build the communication skills necessary in today’s demanding business environment. Increasing your confidence and competence in interacting with others will gain the influence you need to reach new heights in your personal and professional life.
Career Pathways


Nursing and Healthcare Careers
A partnership between Neighborhood Learning Alliance, West Penn Hospital, Community College of Allegheny County, and Carlow University. Students earn college credits aligned to health career college majors through our partnership with CCAC and Carlow University. In addition, students engage in paid work experience at West Penn Hospital where the students participate in rotations of various medical departments.
Work Experience: Students engage in a paid shadow work experience for 80+ hours in the summer at West Penn Hospital and 12-18 hours during the school year.
Professional Engagements: Students participate in career fairs, workshops, site visits, etc.
College Credits: Earn general requirement and STEM based college credits at CCAC and Carlow University. Students have the option to enroll in the High School U School Year & Summer Programs.
Competitive Edge: Students will gain real-world experience shadowing doctors, nurses, and other health career professionals while in high school. In addition, students will earn free college courses.
Business and Entrepreneurship Careers
Students earn college credits towards the CCAC Supervision & Leadership Certificate and Entrepreneurship Certificate. Students meet local business owners, startups, and corporate leaders and learn the various experiences in the business field. Student participants can gain experience to enter the workforce straight after high school or prerequisites for business majors.
Work Experience: Students engage in a paid shadow work experience for 80+ hours in the summer at local businesses in the Pittsburgh region and 25+ hours during the school year.
Professional Engagements: Students participate in career fairs, workshops, site visits, etc.
College Credits: Earn general requirement and business course related college credits at CCAC. Students have the option to enroll in the High School U School Year & Summer Programs.
Competitive Edge: Students will gain real-world experience shadowing entrepreneurs, start-ups, small businesses, corporate leaders, etc. In addition, students will earn free college courses.
Technology Careers
The Technology Careers Pathway is designed to expose students to different career opportunities in the tech field ranging from Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS), Cyber Security, Multimedia, and much more! Students in the Technology Pathway earn college credits through our partnership with CCAC and Carlow aligned to technology careers. Students work alongside IT professionals, content creators, and meet local professionals. Student participants can gain experience to enter the workforce straight after high school or prerequisites for the technology exploration course of focus that semester. Summer 2025 HSU students will conduct their internship experience with the University of Pittsburgh IT team.
Trades, Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Careers
The Trades, Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Careers Pathway will launch for the HSU Summer 2025 Program. The career pathway will introduce students to the in demand careers for the trades, robotics, and advanced manufacturing in the Pittsburgh region. Students will learn about careers they can pursue right after graduating high school through a pipeline program, apprenticeship, or certificate earned through CCAC. Students gain work experience with local industry partners and at the new CCAC Center for Education, Innovation, and Training. Students in the Trades, Robotics, and Advanced Manufacturing Pathway earn credits through our partnership with CCAC.
