Summer College in High School
Purpose of College in High School Program – The principal purpose of the NLA College in High School partnerships is to provide primarily African American Pittsburgh high school students with their first college experience. This is a valuable opportunity that we hope will provide the rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders with greater motivation, skills and purpose as they return in the Fall to their high school classrooms.
Program Summary – In summer 2018, Neighborhood Learning Alliance will be sponsoring approximately 100 Pittsburgh high school students in the College in High School program. Each student selected will have class, tutoring and work requirements that they will be expected to fulfill. The classes are:
- English 101 – This course introduces students to critical thinking, principles of academic writing and rudimentary research skills. Through the writing process, students refine topics, develop and support ideas, investigate, evaluate, and integrate appropriate sources, edit for effective style and usage, and determine appropriate approaches for a variety of contexts, audiences, and purposes.
- SKW 101, Foundations of Writing: This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of college writing and research. These fundamentals include the basic elements of rhetoric (written communication): the organization of ideas, careful use of evidence, reasoned analysis, and coherent use of the fundamental mechanics and grammar of English diction and style. Students will write three 3-4 page papers using the traditional techniques of effective written communication, two will involve college-level research, which requires proficient information literacy and appropriate use of APA (American Psychological Association) citation style.
- PY 101, Introduction to Psychology: A survey of the general field of psychology including the fundamental areas of learning, sensation perception, thought, behavior, motivation, personality, social groups, and the biological basis of behavior.
- Math 080 (Arithmetic Fundamentals), Math 090 (Algebra Fundamentals), Math 108 (Intermediate Algebra) – students will take placement tests to determine the math course they will test into. Students will participate in a condensed and rigorous 4 weeks of that course and if passed, immediately enter into the next level math course, where they will spend the last 4 weeks of the program.
Program Schedule – The 2018 Summer College in High School program will operate from Monday, June 11, 2018 through Friday, August 3, 2018. Students need to be available for all program days. The worksite placements will begin on June 25, 2018 and continue through August 3, 2018. There will be no school or worksite placement activities on July 4th.
Participant Wages – Students can receive an hourly wage and the weekly bus pass by signing up for for the Partner4Work Summer 2018 Learn and Earn program. Neighborhood Learning Alliance has secured funds from the City of Pittsburgh and Partner4Work to allow us to pay the students wages for both their 14 hours per week of college experience and 11 hours of worksite placement. Students who apply and are approved for Learn & Earn will earn $7.25/hour for the combined 25 hours per week. NLA will also provide bus passes to all students who are enrolled in the Learn and Earn program. Students can enroll at www.jobs4summer.org.
Worksite Placement – Students will be placed in worksites for the additional Learn & Earn hours. NLA is hopeful that we can find placements pertaining student class/interest field or the at the college or university location.
Books – Neighborhood Learning Alliance will provide the books for the classes. Students will be responsible for bringing their textbooks to class every day, caring for the books and returning them at the end of the course.
Credits – All students who receive a “C” or better will receive three undergraduate credits. Students who receive a “C” or better at Carlow and decide to go to Carlow University for college will also earn a $2,000 scholarship for each of their four years of undergrad.
All students who are ultimately chosen to participate in Summer 2018 College in High School class will go through a selection process that includes:
- A one page essay answering these questions – Why are you interested in taking this summer college class? Why do you deserve to take this class? What do you intend to take away from this class?
- A copy of your most recent high school transcript
